Amarok 1.x Scripts by attendant 125 comments

first time trying to run the script i got: libtag.so.1 not found, so i linked libtag.so.5 to libtag.so.1 but then i get:
.kde/share/apps/amarok/scripts/transkode/transkode: error while loading shared libraries: libtag.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

i am using amarok-1.3.9_2 and taglib-1.4.2 on freebsd 6.
any ideas?

thanks! - Jun 22 2006

>>It loads current xorg.conf file on start from /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Path to xorg.conf can be changed in future version via command line argument.
To save automatically - work in progress.

- i meant just changing the text on the button to "save" and not "generate".

- you can easily find out which config file is used with:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep "Using config file:"

>>I'll try to do this, but can't guarantee (for can I know how to detect only NVIDIA drivers).

- well if nvidia adapter is detected for example, you could offer the driver choice for:
1) vesa (always supported)
2) nv
3) nvidia (if the nvidia modul is loaded; can be checked with lsmod on gnulinux and kldstat on freebsd) - Jun 20 2006
JuK

Audio Apps by wheeler 53 comments

as a long time juk-fan i have recently switched to amarok...
i always disliked amarok for its tons of uneccessary stuff but i had to face it:
although amarok has loads of bloat-features, it uses half of the memory that juk uses, it starts in about a tenth of the time that juk needs and runs much smoother.

since the last version of juk
- everything has become so slow.
- none of the engines work 100%, gstreamer in juk cant play vorbis, arts crashes, akode plays some mp3s too fast...
- the interface has become cluttered (whats the currently playing thing or the history good for?)
- it cant play streams
- it wastes resources on coverfetching, which doesnt even work....

why has this stuff happended?

...sad... - Jun 20 2006

i like the idea, but it would have to provide some features to be accepted more widely and maybe integrated into kde:
-it should not "generate" a config file, but instead have a save option and automatically load the current file on start.
-it should detect the installed graphics adapter automatically (could be done easily grepping dmesg)
-it should detect available 3rd-party drivers, e.g. the comercial ati and nvidia ones, but should recommend the free drivers.

if it does that i am sure it will be part of kde in future (or at least of some distros).

keep up the work! - Jun 20 2006

i think it would be great if this be imported into kde / merged with knetworkmanager.
it would be great if the profile mechanism be simplified to the point where you can quickly add

also it would be great if kppp's modem connections be integrated with this.

i really love it, only problem i have is that my wallpaper changes every two minutes, but yakuake doesnt update its transparency settings, neither of the frame (the tab-headers), nor of the terminal itself when it is set to tranparent. adding a tab or deleting the current is the only way to update the background of the shell. the backgroiund of the frame cannot be updated at all :(
konsole updates its background automatically, so it should be possible somehow.

thanks for your work anyway! hope this gets integrated into the default kde. - May 15 2006

yes that looks good, but it is rather complicated with all version included...
and it only contains derivates (i.e. "distros" with modified kernel and base), the "distros" are missing (note that many bsd-usern do not like the term "distro", but i nevertheless use it to describe other os that have an unchanged kernel):

freebsd-"distros":
-PC-BSD is a FreeBSD distribution designed for desktop use with simplified package management and a graphical installer
-BSDeviant is a live FreeBSD distribution that can fit on one Mini CD-R.
-ClosedBSD, a distribution aimed at firewall and NAT services.
-The FreeSBIE project is producing live CD distributions of FreeBSD, similar to the Knoppix distribution of Linux. The FreeSBIE project also includes a toolset to help you make your own FreeSBIE live file systems and CDROM's.
-Frenzy is another FreeBSD based live CD, mainly oriented towards Russian speaking users.
-PicoBSD is a one-floppy version of FreeBSD.
-m0n0wall is a FreeBSD-based embedded firewall package.
-pfSense is a firewall/router based on m0n0wall and FreeBSD.
-FreeNAS is NAS server based on FreeBSD/m0n0wall.
-DesktopBSD is a UNIX-like, desktop-oriented operating system based on FreeBSD. Its goal is to combine the stability of FreeBSD with the ease-of-use of KDE, its default graphical user interface.

dragonflybsd-"distros":
-fireflybsd.

netbsd-"distros":
-NewBIE

openbsd-"distros":
-Anonym.OS
-OliveBSD
-microbsd
-ekkobsd

projects with *BSD kernel + gnu-tools:
Debian GNU/NetBSD
Debian GNU/kFreeBSD
Gentoo/FreeBSD
Gentoo/NetBSD
Gentoo/OpenBSD

you could show the difference of distro and derivate with different colored lines or something like that!

cool!
wikipedia has all the info, but to get started (in case you have no clue about bsd):
there are 4 free bsd4.4 derivates out there: freebsd, netbsd (the original two), openbsd and dragonflybsd. dragonflybsd is a derivate from freebsd4 and openbsd is a derivate from netbsd.
there are many distros of freebsd and few of the others.
there are also gnu/kfreebsd distros (debian + ging) and one gnu/knetbsd (debian). - May 02 2006

JuK

i really love juk but there are somethings i dont like about the new version:
- A Now Playing heads-up style title bar featuring the album cover, links to show more from the playing artist or album and a brief history of previously played items
- Cover art management via Google Image Search

is there a way i can deactivate this stuff?
also the new renamer always moves files, is there a way i can tell to only rename the file in its current directory?
i really like the gstreamer backend, but juk is now slower... also it crashes when trying to play ogg vorbis files :( i tried to debug that but it is pretty hard, it automatically skips ogg files in the list, if i select one by hand juk freezes, no segfault, no coredump... all gstreamer plugins are installed.

thanks anyway for your work, hope juk continues and is not pushed away by the amarok-bloatware (sorry to say that but it is just way to cluttered). - May 02 2006

i have just seen that you already talked about this.
the previous poster is wrong though:
your library does definitely not fall under the "system-library-exception".
you would have to add a special extension to your license code, as described on the faq.
then again because the resulting license is less free than the regular gpl, this will render it incompatible with other gpl-code!
since it is incompatible with the gpl it cannot be used with qt.

but since you are the author, why dont you just opensource it? - Mar 28 2006
goLinuxSMS - goWinSMS

Utilities by AlterX 27 comments

just out of curiosity:
you know that the gpl does not allow bundling with gpl-incompatible libraries?
even if you dont mingle the code, you must not link with non-gpl libraries if they arent system libraries (i.e. you may link against a closed source c-library but not against a module or other library). it explicitly states that anything you distribute with the free program must also be free.
QUOTE:
For an executable work, complete source code means all the source code for all modules it contains, plus any associated interface definition files, plus the scripts used to control compilation and installation of the executable.
However, as a special exception, the source code distributed need not include anything that is normally distributed (in either source or binary form) with the major components (compiler, kernel, and so on) of the operating system on which the executable runs, unless that component itself accompanies the executable.

so please release the source for the smslibrary or chose a different license. - Mar 28 2006

Various KDE Stuff by stefano 90 comments

alltogether there are many issues on freebsd:
1. freebsd does not come with bash, if you install bash then it is not in /bin but in /usr/local/bin . please check for that. also make the "autoinstall-everything-Makefile" syntax /bin/sh compliant. things like cd kxdocker-0.4* dont work on standard sh
2. gnu make is called gmake in freebsd, not make; one has to change that in the "autoinstall-everything-Makefile", too.
3. freebsd doesnt come with wget by default, one could use fetch instead. (in the famous Makefile)
4. cpu module doesnt build:
xeplugin_gcpu.cpp:391:2: warning: #warning "add support for SMP on FreeBSD"
xeplugin_gcpu.cpp: In member function `void GCpu::updateCpu(CpuData&, int)':
xeplugin_gcpu.cpp:393: error: `CTL_MAXNAME' undeclared (first use this function)
xeplugin_gcpu.cpp:394: error: `oidCpuTime' undeclared (first use this function)
xeplugin_gcpu.cpp:395: error: `CPUSTATES' undeclared (first use this function)
xeplugin_gcpu.cpp:396: error: `cpuTime' undeclared (first use this function)
xeplugin_gcpu.cpp:402: error: `sysctl' undeclared (first use this function)
xeplugin_gcpu.cpp:413: error: `CP_USER' undeclared (first use this function)

xeplugin_gcpu.cpp:415: error: `CP_SYS' undeclared (first use this function)
xeplugin_gcpu.cpp:416: error: `CP_IDLE' undeclared (first use this function)

5. then everything build and installs fine, but when i run kxdocker it asks for its config, so i give it its config file... then it says:
kxdocker: WARNING: loading xml...
kxdocker: WARNING: loading plugins...
kxdocker: WARNING: Plugins loaded:
kxdocker: WARNING: Going to background...

and nothing happens on my desktop...
(although i must admit the last problem could be caused by me and not by freebsd)
anyway thanks! i hope someone can help me on the last bit, then i might even make a binary package for freebsd ;) - Jan 28 2006

kword handles dark kde styles very bad. when i open a document, first of all everything is black. if i start messing around with frame styles i can get it white, but then the text (that was black-on-black before) becomes white(-on-white).
it is really annoying to the point where it makes kword unusable. why is there no place to simply set the background colors, like in kwrite?

it would be really great if you added
1. the possiblity to create smart playlists based on directories and to remove the precreated playlists (last-played, newest...)
2. a rename-feature, similar to that of juk
3. a dynamic (i.e. where i can define the syntax) info-from-filename detector; this is really better than just taking the first "-" and making everything left of it artist and right of it title. btw. is there a way i can turn this off? it really sucks because it is no longer obvious wich files are tagged and which arent...

i have a solution to this: why not use another encoder? i mean there are so many mencoder and transcode frontends nowadays, although mencoder is very limited.
on the other hand there are no frontends to newer and better encoders like vlc(videolan) or gstreamer. these two encoders support much more video and audio codecs and developement is more active, please consider this!
i would love to see a good kde encoder that suppport the new ogg formats like theora.

are you planning on adding other file formats and codecs? i think it is great that you chose xvid as video codec, but mp3, ac3 and the avi container format are all proprietry.
it would be really great if you added the whole xiph-codec-combinations, the old one being:
xvid-video + ogg-vorbis-audio + ogg media container format
and - even better - the new one:
theora-video + ogg-vorbis-audio + ogg media container format

offering these would bring better compression/quality in audio and video and would remove dependency on win32codecs!

i think that - due to the differences in package management systems - one graphical frontend is not recomendable.
on the other hand i would recommend that kpackage get kparts functionality and load the kports kpart if bsd is selected and load the kuroo kpart(i dont know if it has kpart support but just f.ex.) if gentoo is selected et cetera. this way kpackage will be able to support all special features of a packaging system and have individually supported parts.
i will request this as feature on bugs.kde.org
