KPager2 for Kicker

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by lucher 175 comments

The desktop bug is related to KApplication and KDesktop. KApplication emits the desktopChanged signal at wrong times, KDesktop's DCOP interface does not support getting the wallpapers of different desktops than the current one.

I am gonna wait zuntil this is fixed.

BalloonFileTip patch

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by mabs 10 comments

I have one issue with this.

First, I like the idea of having sophisticated shaped ballon helps. In particular I liked those of Enlightenment.

But: The shape should be dependend on the current GUI widget style. Please, if it is somehow possible, just patch the balloon help in a way that it is asking the KStyle engine to give it a nice shape and background image. Then you could provide your implenentation as a default in KStyle. As a result another style author can still provide his own look and feel (I really don't believe that styles like Baghira go with this balloon help, or - what if in the near future your implementation looks old fashioned?)

What do you think of this problem? In KDE all appearance related things should somehow be related to the Widget style engine. Remember, in KDE1 someone implemented the toolbar separators hard coded in KToolBar. It needed up to 3.2 to find this out and fix it! Don#t do the same mistake again and again... - Mar 20 2005
KDE Improvement 3.4 (Your opinion plz)

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by nookie 36 comments

Don't hard code it.

I really love it and I'd wish this or something similar to be a default, but: The shape and the background of these widgets should generally be defined by the current style engine. Hence: Patch these widgets such that they support KStyle and add a default implementation if it's not supported by the style engine.

I must agree, the rounded selection looks terrible in the screenshots. Honestly i am happy about refining such details. But it doesn't look good for the following reasons:

(1) missing alignments
It looks like shit in konqueror. Either the text will be left aligned (not left of the file thumbnail, but ALL strings aligned to the same line) or centered

(2) Consequency
The selection in QIconView has round corners, now. Why not the selection in ListViews/TreeViews?
I don't get it...

As long as these two thinsg are not fixed the rounded selection looks even worse than the rectangular one.

Window thumbnails idea

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by RockeGomp 8 comments

It is a little more:

WHICH XEvent?

I believe there is none. In my opinion FVWM gets a WM specific event created by the own window decoration when hitting the "Iconify" button. I assume they first take a screenshot and then close it. You probably should find somebody who is willing to patch KWin to provide screenshots token at minimizing windows. - Feb 23 2005

Window thumbnails idea

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by RockeGomp 8 comments

You are wrong because of two reasons:

(1) Live updates of thumbnails are only possible utilizing the new XComposite extension. XComposite, however, lacks of providing a thumbnail for minimized or shaded windows. It's not usable. We need to know when the window is going to be minimized and ask X for the screenshot.

(2) Passive updates by taking screenshots of the actual visible screen are already possible. Examples are Kasbar, KPager(2) and TaskbarV2. These take screenshots of the current active window every 10 or 15 seconds. Problems: (a) Taking the screenshot takes processing time. The cpu hangs every 15 seconds :(. (b) The screenshots of other windows are outdated. (c) It works only in KWin's 'Click-to-focus' mode, which means that the token screenshots may look ugly if other windows cover the active one. (d) To have a better quality, take pictures even on window move and window resize events. And (e): As seen in TaskbarV2 and KPager2 (I am the author) checking all these things produced errors - even if they won't let kicker crash, they may have strong effects on the systems performance.

No - if, then we should find a nice and perfect solution. - Feb 22 2005
Window thumbnails idea

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by RockeGomp 8 comments

Hey. That's a great idea, indeed!

Instead of putting it on the desktop I was thinking about writing a kind of iconbox applet for kicker, similar to enlightenment's iconbox, but having thumbnails in it. On the fvwm info page I found a year back, when they introduced this feature, that they listen to a new XEvent which is emitted just before a window is minimized. The KWin API, however, does not support this event yet. Moreover I don't have any clue how to catch this XEvent directly (I even didn't find which one it is). If someone has a nice link with code examples or a tutorial I would start implementing this.

kwin process info patch

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by uddw 10 comments

From the usuability point of view... I believe it's redundant.

If a programm hangs I push the close button, wait 5 seconds and kwin is asking me if I want to terminate/kill the process.

If a program blocks my cpu, it is hard to get the cpu time to open the menu at all! So why this menu item if it's not reachable in those situations?! I prefer Ctrl+Alt+Escape for those cases to kill any app. Works fine for me. I really believe, this menu item is not necessary.

Where it is necessary that is: Opening ksysguard from kicker's taskbar. And if you want ksysguard to know the process of a window, give ksysguard this function (like it's working in ksnaoshot): Press the button "select window process", the ksysguard window will hide until you press another button, ksysguard determines the process id of the window you cliked on.

Flexible Plugin For KSplash

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by thilomaurer 46 comments

I haven't tested it yet, but sounds liek a necessary plugin. Maybe you can extend the functionality of your plugin for my splashscreen wish:

I don't like those sudden popups. After logging in I want a splash that smoothly fades from the original X screen to the fullscreen splash, having animated images, for example graphically defined progressbars or rotating balls, for each initialization phase a different image. Moreover: Smooth effects between the changes, and: text effects (Use the Shadow engine).

Well... As the maintainer of kager2 I would be thankful for all patchwork regarding 3ddesktop.

Although in my opinion 3ddesktop should become part of kwin, since all pagers call the window manager to switch the desktops.
Or does 3ddesktop even work if I press Ctrl-Shift-Left?

Originally I wanted to start development on kpager2 in march/april again. Hope all of you'll have enough patience for this next release... :) - Jan 03 2005
Crystal-GL

KDE 3.x Window Decorations by dralgebra 175 comments

I have two issues:

(1) a bug: long window title strings are not truncated (what about a fade effect like in kickers taskbar or inserting dots?). Moreover, they should be restricted to the area between the buttons; right now, long strings are drawn ON (overlapping) the buttons.

(2) text shadow color.
I would suggest to give the color of the text shadow some dynamic color detection: white shadow if the text color follows r*g*b < 128*3, else a black shadow. Right now, I have readability problems with dark text colors.

System Tray 2 (with icon hiding support)

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by Dgege 165 comments

Well, I am neither a friend of the text arrow, nor of the icon arrow, nor of the pushbutton at all.

The best way should be to use KStyle to draw the arrow. From a usuability point of view it is nothing else then an extending button, like the arrows on menuitems for sub menus. Moreover, you should rewrite PushButton::drawButton to make it transparent, at least on a transparent kicker. I believe, there are even some special button classes for kicker implemented. If you take the menu applet, for example, you will have kicker conform transparent pishbuttons with a tiny arrow which will fit the current gui style.

just a thought

I like the way of using QToolBox for the Konqu sidebar, BUT:

(!!!!)

I'd like to have multiple 'tools' opened. For example I would like to have the sidebar media player opened the whole time and just switch between home/root folder view or services.
