Great job on these - I can't wait until they're released in full!

I have a question too - what is that that you are running on the right side to show space left on your partitions? - Sep 26 2005

KDE Control Center Ideas

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by teddy 19 comments

I think this just takes something that already works perfectly fine and doesn't look bad (it doesn't "look" at all) and makes it more like Windows XP.

I'm not one to criticize everything for copying XP, but it seems to me this serves little other purpose than that, and it's not even something that is even particularly great.

I don't mean to discourage you from sharing your ideas...that's just my opinion on this one. - Mar 22 2005

see, that's the thing...I shouldn't have to download it to find out what it is.

If it's more than a wallpaper, perhaps a more clear screenshot is in order? Because all I see is a wallpaper with transparent kickers, the plastik theme, and crystal icons. - Mar 16 2005

This splash is very nice and simplistic. However, there is a typo in the word "environment" and it should be changed to say KDE 3.3 as opposed to 3.2, or at least a newer version should be made. - Oct 30 2004

There we go, this is the one.

It's the ONLY icon I've seen that doesn't use the Acrobat logo and that I actually LIKED as opposed to thinking "that was a good effort."

If this one isn't chosen, I will be very disappointed.

EXCELLENT work. - Oct 15 2004

While this is definitely not my favorite possibility, it certainly deserves a score greater than 50%, so I voted it up. Nice work and concept. Personally I'm not a fan of all these icons that make liberal use of "books." To me it makes the icons look bulky and unclear. - Oct 14 2004

I don't know why it's not receiving much better votes :( I think the variations you've presented here are definitely the best options of everything submitted to KDE-Look. They're simple, clear, and have an easy identifyable connection to PDFs and KDE.

Keep up the great work - hopefully the right icons will be chosen. - Sep 29 2004

Awesome! The blue is much more easy on the eyes. Perhaps it might look good if the acrobat symbol were red? I'm not sure if this might clash, but if not I think it could be good since red seems to be acrobat's color. - Sep 29 2004

This is definitely my favorite of all the ones I've seen so far. The only thing I'd say is to consider altering the color scheme a bit. Not sure how, but it seems a bit "in your face" with so much red. Other than that I think this one is EXCELLENT! - Sep 28 2004
My 2 cents for "Aero"

Desktop Concepts by zammi 23 comments

There is one important difference and that is that, with "Aero" one can have the large title border but much smaller side and bottom borders. Rather than create a whole new windeco though, it probably just makes more sense to try and get an addition to the Crystal windeco to adjust a specific border size - if that's even possible. - Sep 25 2004
My 2 cents for "Aero"

Desktop Concepts by zammi 23 comments

While I think the premise of Aero (the transparency, the rounded edges) is real neat, I dislike the large amount of wasted space. However, I see a simple solution: make the size customizable, make a smaller size the default for the Aero windeco, and don't make Aero the KDE default. There we go - keeps KE looking nice without wasting space, while also providing an option for people who like the "playskool" look.

I must say, I haven't tried the Crystal windeco, so forgive me if Crystal basically has all this. Based on the pictures I've seen though, it has hard edges and is always one size. - Sep 24 2004

I'm not a fan of the folders. Too much going on. However, the MIME icons rock IMO! The others, i.e. trash, monitor, and globe, are pretty cool as well.

I would like it if some weren't so clearly Windows and not *NIX though (C: and the start menu to name a couple)

Overall pretty cool. - Jul 29 2004

I *hate* the idea of political debate on KDE-Look, but I simply can't avoid responding to this comment.

I don't like President Bush, but this wallpaper is childish. And as far as it being a prerequisite for a Linux user to be a political left-winger on the verge of socialism, that's just rediculous. The philosophy of open source is a good one, but it doesn't mean anyone who supports it necessarily believes it is the best philosophy for everything. For example, I know a great deal of people who are socially liberal yet fiscally conservative - those people like Bush on some points and hate him on others. Using Linux may fit into their socially liberal outlook, but just because they're a Linux user doesn't mean they will hate Bush.

And, lastly, I'd hardly trust someone who so clearly must believe the homosexual stereotype to tell me what is and is not childish. If you knew what childish was, your choice of words would be vastly different. - Jul 05 2004

I haven't had a chance to try it out yet (not on my Linux machine atm), but it seems to me the volume control graphic to the right of the slider is backwards. Unless the bottom is max volume, it seems to me that the graphic should be reversed so it thickens as it moves to the top. - Jun 02 2004

I think this has to do with the fact most people read from top down. So while it may be furthest from the mouse, it's exactly where the first place a user reading the menu is going to look is. - Apr 28 2004
newMenu

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by aivs 27 comments

A lot of comments here have been right on base. I'm not one to criticize something just because it's too much like Windows. If Windows or Mac OSX has something good, I see nothing wrong with imitating it, and then eventually looking to go BEYOND it as well. However, the Start menu in XP is terrible. I dual boot, and one of the first things I do with the start menu is change it back to "classic view." Why? Because the XP Start menu is so much more difficult to use. I do not want to see that happen to KDE. The best thing I could say is that maybe it would be nice to have an OPTION for it for users who like it, but it should most certainly not be the default.

The other issue is that it is too much like Windows. While I don't think this is an inherently bad issue, there's a certain degree of caution that must be had when imitating something from another OS. If people from Windows migrate over to Linux and KDE, and it looks very much like Windows, they will THINK very much like Windows. They will consciously, or sub-consciously expect it to act like Windows, and when it doesn't, they will be angry. They are in a new operating system - let the visual remind them of that so that it is always in the front of their mind that it is something different and that they must approach it as something different.

Regarding user choice, as was mentioned in the post above concerning slicker, I think it's a bad idea to make it difficult for users to change UI. It should be something that requires sufficient steps in kcontrol so as to prevent it from accidentally being changed (I really see no problem with how it is now) but it should be something that a user who wants to change it should have no problem doing so. The problem isn't with giving users options, as many UI designers seem to think these days, it's with not giving users strong defaults. If your UI design is so great, the user won't switch from it even if they can. Let the USER make the decision, not you. - Apr 27 2004
