Really mostly because it makes it easy to stay up to date. While there may not be compiling involved, one of the nice things about portage is that everything on the system can be updated with a simple "emerge -U world" removing the need to continuously watch specific projects - especially when they're under continuous and non-scheduled development.

Of course, it's also not a terribly big deal - it's a great little tool either way :) Just thought it'd be nice if it was something you knew how to do easily :) - Apr 13 2004

I'm not going to vote you donwn because there's nothing wrong with the artistic side of your wallpaper and I'm against voting people down because you don't agree with the ideologies their work represents. But, I really don't think communism is part of the ideology behind Linus Torvald's creation of Linux or drobbin's creation of Gentoo. Not to mention I don't think it's a good idea to celebrate ruthless dictators who murder people who oppose them, whether you agree with communism or not.

um, you do realize that, aside for the colors, that's just Keramik, the default KDE theme. Aside for that, just because you don't like things to be easy to read and use, why shouldn't the option and ability be there for other people? This is Linux we're talking about. EVERYTHING has a place in it. If I like my desktop environment to look "big and easy to use" then that's my business. Who are you to say I can't have it that way? I'm not taking away from your ability to use a desktop environment that is not big and not easy to use.

Sorry for getting off-topic, I just find it funny that people who love Linux because it has choice don't like it when UI choices don't reflect THEIR choice.
