Kuake

System Tools (NOT OS or ROMS) by epoch 14 comments

hey, I've just installed this brilliant app, but I'm wondering how I can get it to load on startup.

Usually my sessions are restored, but kuake isn't restored with my other programs (JuK, etc).

I've tried writing a shellscript and putting it in $HOME/.kde/Autostart (which is how I start xscreensaver, for example) but it doesnt work.

Does anyone else have any ideas? - May 29 2004

kdvdbackup

Utilities by nickprotopapas 31 comments

I think as DVDBackup is only for ripping the DVD-Video content to Harddisk it?s nice to have it as a standalone program.

As a DVD-copy Plugin for K3B it would be nice to integrate lxdvdrip in K3B.
So it would be also possible to make DVD9-to-DVD5 copies with K3B.

What do you think about that?

Flying penguins

Wallpaper Other by nisse 15 comments

i have done around 60% on the 1600x1200
the problem is that i tweaked the pics quite much so i can't simply cut and paste in extensions

the sky pic is the simplest since i can just delete the modified and recoulor a bigger version (both pics are originaly in daylight for example hehe)

but with the penguins it is a bit more painfull since i edited out sevral penguins and moved one, to have a more effectfull layout, less clutered etc

so i have to do some guess work, like where did i put the extra lighting, colours used etc :( - May 04 2004

There is a lot wrong with it. First, if you are editing a file somewhere deep in the filesystem and you don't have the path memorized, you have to copy and paste it. Second, 90% of KDE users don't know that kdesu exists. Third, it is odd to enter commands in a GUI. Forth, "run command" is more for doing odd one-time proceedures, not routine tasks. Fifth, your logic could be used to say that you don't even need "Run Command..." after all, you could just open a Konsole. - Apr 18 2004

- how exactly do you get the desktop to crash?
- can you again make a nice menutest to show what you mean?
- shadows are not accurate - but fast (direct register access -> worry about you said the desktop crashed as i couldn't create such effect), eg. real dropshadows would also draw a bright dark area on the counterside.
but providing straight top lights is also possible (but hey: this was my first try for the doublebuffered shadows - so polishment will follow... ;-)
- I DO NOT LIKE M$ STYLE!!! ;-)
- shadows on button texts are easy - but not very nice (as you'd write just in a brighter color.) liquid had them, but i removed them, as this way, text sometimes ran out of the button area.
- just changes the progress bar... i know, i should improve the dialog... (i'll probably make a new one for kde 3.2) - Dec 10 2003

How exactly did you copyright your images? Just putting "Copyrighted by " doesn't mean its legally copyrighted. I'm not saying its moral or ethical to take/use other peoples work, but people who do this so-called 'digital artwork' who then slap copyright notices all over their images/web sites don't actually have legal recourse.

On top of that, using copyrighted work without permission is NOT theft. There is a legal distinction between theft and copyright violation. The only legal recourse you have, provided you actually have a valid copyright, is to sue to get someone to stop using it and/or for the direct damages caused to you by them using it. Of which, I highly doubt there has been any.

In short: Quit you whining and don't bother slapping fake copyright notices on your images.

Good day. ^_^ - Nov 30 2003

Yeah - sorry, I'm a real picky b*****d!!!

As to the tab height thing - yeah, you should move the un-selected tabs 1 (or 2 if you prefer) pixels lower. You *can* also get the text to move. I think it may be one of the Qt style properties - look at http://doc.trolltech.com/3.2/qstyle.html. I *know* this can be done - I made some changes to liquid a while ago, and thiswas one of th changes.

Another change I did, which you might consider was using the pixmap you seem to be using for combos as the pixmap for highlighted/slected buttons.

As for the radio pixmaps - I'll try to see if I have an old version lying around.

And I run at 1024x768 on a laptop - so its easier to spot missing pixels, etc. - Nov 05 2003

[RedHat9/Mandrake9.1] Karamba RPM/SRPM

Karamba & Superkaramba by dcpark 57 comments

The way to get around the libGLcore.so.1 dependecy without disabling automatic dependency checking is as follows:

1)In your ~/.rpmmacros file, you must redefine %__find_requires, but first you want to see what it is, but without evaluating it (which could emtpy variables). On Mandrake 9.1, you get this:

$ grep find_requires /usr/lib/rpm/macros
%__find_requires /usr/lib/rpm/find-requires %{?buildroot:%{buildroot}} %{?_target_cpu:%{_target_cpu}}

So, redefine %__find_requires to be something like this:

%__find_requires %(echo $HOME)/bin/find-requires-nonvidia %{?buildroot:%{buildroot}} %{?_target_cpu:%{_target_cpu}}

2)Make a script $(HOME)/bin/find-requires-nonvidia which looks like this:
$ cat bin/find-requires-nonvidia
#!/bin/bash
/usr/lib/rpm/find-requires $@|sed "s/libGLcore.so.1//g"

If there are problems here with line-wrapping, you can find an example .rpmmacros file here:
http://ranger.dnsalias.com/mandrake/configs/rpmmacros

And here is an example find-requires-nonvidia:

Hi,

I haven't tried it yet, since I have a rather slow machine and I guess it takes too much performance.

Anyway... I see that all themes are written for specific resolutions. This is bad especially for Laptop Users that have to change the resolution frequently (external monitor).

What about beeing able to place several sections in a theme file that are resolutions dependent, e.g.

-----------------------------
[Resolution 1024 768]
- Apr 05 2003
Yes, at first I just redid the red (now yellow) dots in the animated pictures, but then on some cursors I also wanted to redo the look of the arrow/circle, so I've been moving the little dot around in Sodipodi, then exporting to a PNG. It doesn't take too long once I get into it :)

What must be possible, and would be very cool, would be to make a script that automatically creates all of the PNGs from a single SVG, and can modify colours/fill styles. SVGs are smply XML files, so you could in theory do it, though it's more work than I can be bothered with. It would let you just regenerate your cursors in any colour combination though :D - Mar 19 2003
Is this possible to do this in a theme?

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by ra1n 18 comments

I can't tell you for a KDE/QT-style, but basically the problems are assumptions in the underlying layers:

- X11 assumes that every application wants (exactly) rectangular windows and provides exactly that. There is a way around that (the SHAPE extension) but it complicates things a bit.
- Toolkits (like Qt) often assume that their themes all want to provide (exactly) rectangular windows and model their API to represent that (I don't know if this is true for Qt, but I assume so, 'cause I've never seen a QT/KDE-Style that doesn't use rectangular windows).

I'd say the task at hand is possible, but quite hard ('though not "extremly hard, only the ones with m4d progr4mming skillz might try!"). - Mar 19 2003

I wouldn't mind much if I saw men either. So long as the images aren't breaking any laws that nations tend to have on advertising (so no total nudes) I don't see any problem with it. If you're such a prude that you don't want to see semi-naked people, then just don't click on it.

There is of course a side issue, which is how much content should KDE-Look take on? Should it be a place for the highest quality KDE eye candy, or should it be a repository for everybody's KDE eye candy? Personally, so long as we have ratings, I don't mind the way it is now, but perhaps some people want more high quality KDE-centered art, and less eye candy with the KDE branding on it? - Mar 19 2003
Yers, I noticed that after I had a closer look - it is GNOME vs KDE, not just Gtk vs Qt ;)

I should release the yellow versions either this evening or tomorrow :) It's not too hard just opening the SVGs and changing the colours, and I changed the Makefile so it'll install properly :)

That's a shame about Qt cursors. I suppose arrows facing in is most intuitive, because the normal resizing ones (in GNOME) face in as well. Nevermind.

As for kill... why do I not get the reddot kill cursor? I still get the X skull and cruss bones! And I might alter that one - I like my skulls ;) - Mar 19 2003
First off, great cursor theme! I'm planning on making some different colour versions of this, and I'll post them as soon as I've finished!

Now I've found some missing cursors. First off is the kill cursor, which is completely missing from the set! Next, the symlinks for Qt/KDE seem to be messed up, because the wrong cursors are shown when resizing windows by their sides/top/bottom. In Gtk apps I get the left_side, right_side etc. cursors, but in Qt/KDE I get the h_doublearrow and v_doublearrow. That might be deliberate, but you really should keeps things standard, as it's confusing having different cursors between widget sets! - Mar 18 2003
make install does't work for me.
i do the cursors generation by hand
>cd sources
>for file in *; do if [ -d $file ]; then xcursorgen $file/${file}.conf ../cursors/${file}; fi; done
>for file in *.conf; do xcursorgen ${file} ../cursors/${file%%.conf}; done
>cd ..
>make install

I'd just like to agree with Markus. I think you should be more responsible in what you write, especially when it comes to licenses. 1. I did not say that france or any party involved have a clean white shirt - all the nations involved have been digging in the dirt as it were. I find it rather hypocritical that one of the nations who has been funding terrorism on a large scale world-wide, who has been in breech of UN-resolutions, and which is about to be in breech of international law is shouting the loudest.

2. Very democratic - if someone does not do exactly as we want them we put pressure on them - as in the case sanctions against germany - but hey what do you expect, America is probably the only democracy were the candidate with 500.000 less votes wins!

3. America has still not come up with any plan, what it will do afterwards - sth. they probably don't really know themselves - bush just waffles, without giving any content - pure propaganda. 'He is running out of patience'(is that maybe the american analytical skills you were referring to?), well so I am with my neighbour, I might just go down and shoot him this afternoon!

4. America disregards all other voices, even from all the experts around the world as well as within America, who predict not only a humanitarian catastrophy but also the fact that war with Iraque will destabilize the whole gulf region even more, does do nothing in the war against terrorism (the real threat), weakens the UN, and probably will very likely aggrevate the whole muslim world (but hey - america can then just bomb the next nation and then the next and so on) furthering extremism. sorry but bush has far too many military advisors - and of course they want war.

5. This is about hegemony - or more precisely american hegemony. what really worries me is the 'missionray' zealousy of american policy and especially foreign policy. to refer back to point number 4 - where will this lead to ??? probably to american military occupation around the world - pax america, the new roman empire

6. I am not generally anti-american, in fact i have got very good american friends, but i am anti-american-imperialism and foreign policy. you may disagree, fine, but i am entitled to my views - maybe sth. that (and I just assume you are) as an american are not to. - Mar 04 2003
