Ah okay, those are needed for the gcc visibility stuff. Dirk just added a few more to cvsservice/cvsaskpass.cpp and cvsservice/main.cpp. Strange thing is that those KDE_EXPORT macros existed since way before KDE 3.3. So this can't be the real problem.

Could it be that you have problems because of a gcc bug? Dirk commited a patch to kde-common/admin because of this bug.

See http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=19664 and http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde-cvs&m=111028929923032&w=2. - Mar 08 2005

Here are the directions to install this patch in Gentoo:

Do all this as root:
emerge -av kdebase
Say yes and watch closely. When you see the message ">>> Source unpacked." hit control-z immediately. This will pause the process so that we can make changes to the source before it is compiled. If you hit control-z a little late, don't be worried, it'll still work.
cd /var/tmp/portage/kdebase-3.3.2-r1/work/kdebase-3.3.2/
(Notice that I'm using a more recent version :)
bzcat ~user/20904-logout_blur_01.bz2 | patch -p1
You should see the messages:
patching file ksmserver/shutdown.cpp
patching file ksmserver/shutdown.h

Then type 'fg' to tell the emerge job to continue. - Feb 18 2005

M$ already has something like this in Longhorn.

I am not very good in photoediting, but mockups would definitely be a good thing. Let's see if somebody more talented than me has some mockups.

Back in my Windows times I used the miranda instant messanger, and it had the most beautiful popup-system I have ever seen:

http://miranda-im.org/download/files/screenshot/1-1-1022569026-popup1005.gif

I think, kde's popups should look like this and also implement the feature of stacking concurrent popups above each other. - Feb 09 2005

I agree, the default should open to the user's home directory, but at the same time the user should be able to discover the network protocols by having the abilty to add them to their tree-view.

Konqueror should be smart enough to include network protocols that are already in use (for example, Samba or NFS shares that are already mounted), and at the same time give the user the ability to add new protocols. - Jan 21 2005

it's you ;)

No seriously I think it doesn't get in the way normally and we have the option here to make the trigger time a bit higher than it is in windows.

But I think this should be done just like it is in K3B. You can try it when you create a data project in the lower pane - it's not possible in the filesystem browser (upper pane) in K3B.

I suppose this feature would have to be in QT for this - which is what I'm suggesting.
I don't think it's very hard to do and could even be taken from K3B itself.

So the only question is IF we want it and IF someone is gonna do it.

I really think it doesn't get so much in the way as it could be usefull... think of it like this:

The only real-world situation where you would trigger it would be when you do a double-click (to open something) too slow.

- *with* this feature you would trigger the rename function and see "oh, that's not what I wanted". You click somewhere else and try to doubleclick again

- *without* this feature a doubleclick done too slow will just do - nothing. So instead of an immediate response you wonder why nothing happens.

Actually I do not think that the first option (with the feature) would result in a higher loss of time, when what you actually want to do is double-click something.
Reason for that is that the moment when nothing happens ("hey, what's that? it doesn't open?!") is just as long to humans as the immediate response (triggering the rename operation) including the workaround to click some other location to try again.

Ok, I suppose that this explanation is complicated to understand, but I re-read it and think it says what I mean - maybe some clever guy (or girl) comes around, thinks the same and implements it.

It's not "da-killer" feature but it's one o those niceties that make KDE so much more usable than other systems... erm, well kind of :) - Dec 01 2004

would it be possible to choose either sidebar, because in all honesty, this sidebar is much more elegant.
I mean, the KDE sidebar is plain ugly... when it comes down to it, the only plus feature of the KDE sidebar is space used when multipe sidebar 'pages' are used, eg konqy, so not half of teh sidebar's vertical space is used with options. But with this, options are a t a minimum, they've been refined, which should be the case, not just aloowing for more.

anyway, if that made sense, if not, the long & short. coudl you make either sidebars optional in a .rc file? - Nov 11 2004
TDE - T Desktop Enhancements

Karamba & Superkaramba by chip2003 60 comments

I took the liberty of adding the kernel version & KDE version to the space below the network monitor in T-perf theme. It balances the chip info that is at the top.

To do this, add the following lines below the last in the "edit theme" file (tperf.theme):

# This adds the Kernel version & KDE version you are running
text x=30 y=160 value="Kernel:" color=0,0,0 fontsize=9 align="left"
text x=62 y=160 sensor=program program="uname -r" color=1,1,1 fontsize=9 align="left"
text x=150 y=160 value="KDE:" color=0,0,0 fontsize=9 align="left"
text x=175 y=160 sensor=program program="kde-config --version | grep KDE | sed -e 's/.*: //'" line=1 color=1,1,1 fontsize=9 align="left"

I got the idea & modified the code from the ubermon theme. You may want to play with the x= setting depending on the number of characters in your kernel version.

Now if I could figure out how to keep the list of processes connecting out in tnetstat.theme to not run off the background when I'm bittorrenting w/ Azureus. Any ideas?

BTW, kudos to Chip2003 for a great theme set.

Password Creator

Security by neptune 18 comments

I created a similar script in php once that had 1 distinguished feature: all generated passwords were pronouncable.
In my experience users tend to stick to the initial passwords more often if they can pronounce it! Would be nice to add.
The algorithm for creating a readable password I came up with:

array C are Consonants
array V are Vowels
array A are C+V

1. Choose a random char from A
2. if (previous 2 chars were 2xC or 2xV) choose from 'the other side' else: 1.
3. if char is last char: never end with double V.

It's not foolproof, but a nice start.

Additionally you could replace all characters that look like numbers. e.g. i = 1, e=3, s=5, z=2 etc...

I downloaded the whole of the kdemultimedia source distribution and couldn't find directorylistbase.cpp. That said, I have had the same problem with other applications. The way I solved those, was to open
the header file relating to the cpp source file, in this case, probably directorylistbase.h. I then declared the variable that the compiler was complaining about. In this case the compiler seems to complaining about rightColumnSpacer. Without us telling the compiler what rightColumnSpacer is, the compiler wouldn't know what to do with that variable. A bit like asking someone to pick they're favourite. They're favourite of what?! So in the header file I would find a list of control declarations. They would normally look something like this...

QLabel *label1;
QLabel *label2;
QLabel *label3;
etc.

I would then add the missing control. In our case it is rightColumnSpacer, so add

QSpacer *rightColumnSpacer;

Now the compiler knows that the variable 'rightColumnSpacer' is infact a pointer to a QSpacer object.

Try compiling again. You may find the compiler would complain about a different missing spacer object.

As I said though, I downloaded the full source distribution for kdemultimedia, ran './configure' in the top-level folder, followed by 'make && su -c "make install" in the juk folder, without any problems, so if fiddling with the source
seems like too much of bother, and let's
face it, it souldn't be required, you could try downloading the full sources here...

ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/latest/src/kdemultimedia-3.3.0.tar.bz2

I hope this helps at least a bit.

Best of luck

This is certainly not for entertainment! If you know of any other "better ways of honouring them" that are taking place then go ahead and tell me, but I don't remember their names being read out on TV, I don't remember most of the deaths reported on iraqbodycount.org even being reported on the mainstream news. reported by a minimum of three independent sources. In fact, to be a peace lover you have look beyond the crap you're spoon-fed by the popular media. The people who lost their lives on September 11th have world-wide remembrance days, their names all read out in a ceremony attended by the president of the USA himself. The dead civilians in Iraq have no such televised ceremony and their deaths are barely acknowledge let aloned counted. You happily spout out the fact that 3000 kids lost their parents on 9/11. How would you know, without iraqbodycount.org, how many Iraqi civilians lost their lives???? And as for "killed by their own terrorists", what makes you think these aren't counted? get your facts right before you post crap like that. YOUR crap should be deleted. - Sep 20 2004

Press the Add... button to open the Add Repository dialog.

Enter the repository location in the Repository: edit box. Cervisia will automatically disable the areas of the dialog that are not relevant to the access method you entered.

so I entered

If the access method to the repository you just entered is password authentication (pserver), you will need to login before connecting the server. Click the repository on the list to select it, and press the Login... button. Enter your password in the pop-up dialog.

the thing is I highlight it a click on login and I have never seen a popup box to fill in with the password

I have found a few problems with the new baghira. I hope these can be fixed soon because right now certain applications are looking fairly nasty.

1) brushed metal not consistent across widgets. In this screenshot you can see the horrid blue background on the position slider (top righ)

http://www.blackapology.com/downloads/jukslider.jpg

2) when selecting the non flat brushed metal for the title bar and window borders there are holes where the background of the desktop shows through; this is excentuated when a large border is used

I hope this is helpful in debugging.

Keep up the good work and please fix soon!

Hi, this is modified Xserver from freedesktop.org (Kdrive) - Jun 21 2004
Ballistik

KDE 3.5 Themes by florianm 13 comments

i cant install mine first i had same problems as the above "suse-user", these can be solved by installing automake-1.7 (important i had automake-1.4 installed, you need automkae-1.7 ADDITIONALLY). after configuring sucessfully i get the following response from make:

cd . && /bin/sh /home/hannes/ballistik-0.5/admin/missing --run aclocal-1.7
cd . && \
/bin/sh /home/hannes/ballistik-0.5/admin/missing --run automake-1.7 --foreign Makefile
cd . && perl admin/am_edit Makefile.in
Can't open perl script "admin/am_edit": Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden

what now?
could anybody who got this working on debian (sid) maybe provide a deb or an apt-repository?
thanks - Jun 20 2004
